India’s 2026 campaign ended with the biggest win in a T20 World Cup final. India scored 255 for 5 against New Zealand and won by 96 runs.

Sanju Samson was Player of the Tournament with 321 runs at an average of 80.25, including 89 against England in the semi-final and 89 in the final, the highest score in a T20 World Cup final.

Ishan Kishan scored 77 off 40 against Pakistan and 54 off 25 in the final, while Abhishek Sharma added 52 off 21 in the title match. Shivam Dube played a key all-round role with 235 runs at a strike rate of 169.06 and five wickets, including 66 off 31 against the Netherlands and 26 not out off 8 in the final. Hardik Pandya contributed 217 runs and nine wickets.

India’s bowlers controlled the tournament as well. Jasprit Bumrah took 4 for 15 in the final and finished with 14 wickets at an average of 12.42, the same as Varun Chakravarthy. Axar Patel picked up 11 wickets, including 3 for 27 in the final, while Arshdeep Singh ended his T20 World Cup career with 35 wickets, moving past Bumrah’s earlier record of 33.

India stayed unbeaten throughout the 2024 tournament. In the final against South Africa in Barbados, India scored 176 for 7 and restricted South Africa to 169 for 8, winning by 7 runs. Virat Kohli scored 76 in the final and was named Player of the Match. 

Jasprit Bumrah was Player of the Tournament with 15 wickets in eight matches at an average of 8.26 and an economy rate of 4.17, including 2 for 18 in the final.

Rohit Sharma captained the side and finished as India’s top scorer with 257 runs at a strike rate of 156.70, including 92 against Australia and 57 against England in the semi-final before retiring from T20Is.

India’s title run was powered by a balanced attack. Arshdeep Singh finished as the joint highest wicket taker and delivered key overs in the powerplay and death. Hardik Pandya added crucial runs and wickets, Rishabh Pant recorded 14 dismissals behind the stumps, and Kuldeep Yadav took 10 wickets in five matches from the Super 8 stage, including 3 for 19 against Bangladesh.

England (2022)

England won the 2022 T20 World Cup in Melbourne, becoming the first team to hold both the ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup simultaneously.

Pakistan scored 137 for 8 in the final, but England chased 138 for 5 in 19 overs. Ben Stokes guided the chase with 52 not out from 49 balls.

Sam Curran played a major role in the tournament. He took 3 for 12 in the final and finished with 13 wickets at an average of 11.38 and an economy rate of 6.52. Curran was named Player of the Match in the final and Player of the Tournament.

England reached the final after defeating India by 10 wickets in the semi-final, where Jos Buttler scored 80 not out, and Alex Hales made 86 not out while chasing 169 in 16 overs.

Australia secured its first T20 World Cup title in Dubai. New Zealand scored 172 for 4 in the final, but Australia chased 173 for 2 in 18.5 overs.

Mitchell Marsh played the decisive innings with 77 not out from 50 balls and reached his fifty in 31 deliveries. Josh Hazlewood took 3 for 16, which helped keep New Zealand’s total under control.

Australia’s only loss in the tournament came against England in the Super 12 stage. The team later defeated Pakistan in the semi-final before beating New Zealand in the final.

David Warner finished as Player of the Tournament with 289 runs at an average of 48.16 and a strike rate of 146.70. Adam Zampa supported the bowling attack with 13 wickets, including 5 for 19 against Bangladesh.

West Indies (2016)

The 2016 final produced one of the most famous finishes in T20 cricket. West Indies needed 19 runs from the last over against England at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Carlos Brathwaite hit 4 consecutive sixes off Ben Stokes to seal the match, and West Indies won by four wickets.

Marlon Samuels scored 85 not out from 66 balls, which remains the highest individual score in a T20 World Cup final. Brathwaite finished with 34 not out and also took 3 for 23 in the match.

West Indies had earlier chased 193 against India in the semi-final, where Lendl Simmons scored 82 not out off 51 balls. Samuel Badree bowled economically across the tournament with an economy rate of 5.39.

Sri Lanka finally ended a long wait for a global title in 2014. India scored 130 for 4 in the final, but Sri Lanka chased the target by reaching 134 for 4 in 17.5 overs in Dhaka.

Sri Lanka conceded only 19 runs in the final four overs of the Indian innings, which kept the target within reach. Kumar Sangakkara scored 52 not out from 35 balls in his final T20 international and was named Player of the Match.

Rangana Herath produced one of the best spells of the tournament with 5 for 3 against New Zealand while defending 119. 

Sri Lanka also bowled the Netherlands out for 39 in the group stage and won that match with 90 balls remaining. Mahela Jayawardene scored 158 runs in the tournament and became the first batter to reach 1,000 T20 World Cup runs.

West Indies (2012)

West Indies won their first T20 World Cup title in Colombo. They scored 137 in the final and bowled Sri Lanka out for 101, winning by 36 runs.

Chris Gayle played a major role during the knockout stage. In the semi-final against Australia, he scored 75 not out as the West Indies won by 74 runs.

Marlon Samuels finished with 230 runs across the tournament, including 78 from 56 balls in the final. Sunil Narine delivered a strong performance with the ball in the title match, taking 3 for 9.

West Indies also defeated England and New Zealand during the Super 8 stage, including a Super Over victory against New Zealand.

England won their first T20 World Cup title in Bridgetown. Australia scored 147 for 6 in the final, but England chased 148 for 3 in 17 overs. Craig Kieswetter scored 63 in the final to lead the chase.

Kevin Pietersen was the leading batter for England during the tournament with 248 runs at an average of 62 and was named Player of the Tournament. This victory also became England’s first ICC global title in any format.

Pakistan (2009)

Pakistan lifted the trophy at Lord’s after chasing 139 against Sri Lanka in the final. Sri Lanka scored 138 for 6, but Pakistan reached 139 for 2 in 18.4 overs.

Shahid Afridi scored 54 not out from 40 balls and also took 1 for 20 in the match. Abdul Razzaq took 3 for 20, which reduced Sri Lanka to 32 for 4 early in the innings.

Umar Gul finished the tournament as the leading wicket taker with 13 wickets at an average of 12.15, including 5 for 6 against New Zealand, the first five-wicket haul in T20 international cricket. Saeed Ajmal also added 12 wickets with an economy rate of 5.82.

The first T20 World Cup ended with a close final in Johannesburg. India scored 157 for 5 and bowled Pakistan out for 152 in 19.3 overs to win by 5 runs.

Gautam Gambhir scored 227 runs in the tournament, including 75 in the final. Yuvraj Singh scored 148 runs and hit six sixes in one over against England while also making 70 off 30 balls against Australia. He also recorded the fastest fifty in T20 international cricket at the time, with a 12-ball half-century.

Rohit Sharma scored a fifty against South Africa and added 30 not out in the final. Irfan Pathan took 3 for 16 in the final and was named Player of the Match. 

RP Singh finished as India’s leading wicket taker with 12 wickets at an average of 12.66, while Harbhajan Singh also picked up important wickets across the event.
