Stephen Fleming: The Most Successful IPL Coach

Stephen Fleming’s basically a legend in the IPL coaching world. The former New Zealand skipper took over the Chennai Super Kings back in 2009 and never looked back. Under his watch, CSK won five titles—2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023—and reached ten finals.

Fleming’s got this calm vibe in the dugout. He reads the game like a pro and knows precisely when to shake things up. His partnership with MS Dhoni has become iconic. CSK trusts him completely, and honestly, he just keeps delivering.

Mahela Jayawardene Returns to Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians brought back Mahela Jayawardene in October 2024, hoping to capture the magic again. The Sri Lankan coach coached MI from 2017 to 2022, a period during which they lifted three trophies.

Jayawardene gets T20 cricket—he builds strong team spirit and helps his stars handle pressure. Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah really thrived under him. After Mark Boucher’s stint didn’t quite work out, MI turned back to Jayawardene to get back on top.

Fresh Faces Take Charge

For IPL 2026, several teams made coaching changes.

Abhishek Nayar

Kolkata Knight Riders turned to Abhishek Nayar after a rough 2025 season and Chandrakant Pandit’s exit.

Nayar, who’s been with KKR as an assistant since 2018, knows the team inside out and helped shape talents like Rinku Singh. Plus, KKR added Shane Watson as assistant coach for that extra edge.

Kumar Sangakkara

Kumar Sangakkara is back in charge of Rajasthan Royals for 2026, taking over from Rahul Dravid.

Sangakkara’s also still their Director of Cricket. During his earlier stint, he took RR to the 2022 final. This might be the year Rajasthan and Sanga can again put their hands on the trophy.

International Stars in Coaching Roles

The league’s got plenty of international legends coaching now.

Daniel Vettori

Daniel Vettori is calling the shots for Sunrisers Hyderabad. The former New Zealand spinner led SRH to the 2024 final in his first season as head coach. Before that, he coached Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2014 to 2018.

Daniel Vettori and Pat Cummins work great together for Australia as well. Two bowlers go with the same mindset.

Andy Flower

Andy Flower leads RCB’s coaching staff. The Zimbabwean great finally delivered RCB’s first IPL title in 2025, breaking an 18-year drought. He joined the team in 2023 after helping Lucknow Super Giants make the playoffs for two straight years.

Andy Flower and Rajat Padidar will look to defend their title this year. Not much to do there. Just put the right thing in the right places like they did last year.

Justin Langer

Justin Langer is now with Lucknow Super Giants. He’s got an impressive résumé—he led Australia to wins in both the T20 World Cup and Test Championship. LSG brought him in to build a winning culture and go all-in for the title.

Justin Langer is a smart coach who leads Australia pretty well. This might be the year of Langer-Pant.

Indian Coaches Making Their Mark

Indian coaches are playing a bigger role in shaping IPL team success.

Ashish Nehra

Ashish Nehra stands out among Indian coaches. He guided the Gujarat Titans to the title in their debut season in 2022, making him the first Indian head coach to win the IPL.

Nehra keeps things simple and makes sure his bowlers have clear plans. GT reached the 2023 final too, only losing to CSK. He’s known for keeping morale high and staying positive—key reasons for GT’s continued success.

Varun Aaron

Varun Aaron has been appointed the new bowling coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad. He has replaced James Franklin. He brings extensive experience of playing in IPL and domestic cricket.

Aaron featured in 52 matches in the IPL and played for a total of five teams. He took 44 wickets at an average of 33.65. He was a part of GT’s squad that lifted the IPL cup in 2022.

Recent Coaching Staff Changes

Support staff gets revamped all the time. Bharat Arun left KKR to become Lucknow’s bowling coach. LSG also picked up Carl Crowe as their spin consultant. Rajasthan Royals kept Vikram Rathour as assistant coach and Shane Bond as fast bowling coach for another year.

Why Coaches Matter in IPL

A good coach can turn a decent squad into champions. They pick the right playing eleven, shape the team’s game plan, and manage all the ups and downs in the dressing room. When things get tense, it’s their experience that steers the team through.

IPL coaches don’t just shape teams—they’re well-rewarded too. Their salaries range from ₹1.5 crore to ₹5.8 crore a season. Stephen Fleming, for instance, reportedly earns at the very top of that bracket.
