Born in a farming family in Karnal, Haryana, Kamboj started playing cricket at 11 to get fit. His father Udham Singh supported him in this, and soon it turned into a career.

His best domestic performance (and probably best achievement) was against Kerala, where he did what no other Haryana player had done before, by taking all 10 wickets in one innings in the Ranji Trophy, with figures of 10/49 in just 30.1 overs!
