India has announced its ODI and T20I squads for the Australia tour, starting from 19 October. The main headline is that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been included in the ODI squad, but Rohit has lost his ODI captaincy.
Shubman Gill is the New ODI Captain
Shubman Gill is the new ODI captain of the Indian side, replacing Rohit Sharma, as the Agarkar and selectors team made these changes while keeping World Cup preparation in mind.
Another significant development is that Shreyas Iyer has been appointed the new vice-captain of the ODIs, following his recent success in domestic cricket as a captain. After a busy schedule, Jasprit Bumrah was not included in the ODI series, having played in the Asia Cup 2025 and the 2-match test series against West Indies.
Agarkar Statement on Rohit and Kohli
After announcing the squad, Ajit Agarkar said on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, “They have completed all the required formalities to be in the team. We always send the names selected to CoE and confirm their fitness. They are the greats of the game. They have scored tons of runs for India. We just expect them to score runs for India and continue to do that. They are leaders of the team.”
On the question of removing Rohit as ODI captain, he cleared, “Rohit Sharma has been communicated about the change of captaincy. We don’t play too many ODIs, and we needed to give the next guy enough time. How Rohit has taken the decision to change captains is between him and the selection committee.
We have made it clear that if guys are free, they should be playing domestic cricket. Even if Rohit wouldn’t have won the Champions Trophy, this was a difficult decision.”
