The Indian cricket team under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav won the Asia Cup 2025 after defeating Pakistan in the final by five wickets. India chased down the target of 147 runs in 19.4 overs. Tilak Varma played an unbeaten knock of 69 runs off 53 deliveries and won the Player of the Match award.
After the win, the Indian team refused to collect the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, who is the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Naqvi is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister and refused to change his mind of giving the trophy to the Indian cricket team.
The presentation ceremony started after a delay of more than an hour and a half. According to a report in Cricbuzz, the delay was due to the standoff between the Indian team and Naqvi. The trophy was already taken off from the ground before the presentation ceremony started.
Reasons Why India Not Given Asia Cup Trophy
Naqvi remained adamant on giving the trophy to the Indian team. Emirates Cricket Board vice-chairman Khalid Al Zarooni and BCB’s Aminul Islam were also present during the presentation ceremony and offered to give the trophy to the Indian team. However, Naqvi denied all requests, and hence, the Indian team was not presented with the trophy.
The Indian captain didn’t speak during the presentation ceremony. Simon Doull, who was hosting the ceremony, announced that, “I have been informed by the Asian Cricket Council that the Indian cricket team will not be collecting their awards tonight. So that does conclude the post-match presentation.”
The Indian team, however, did celebrate after Naqvi left the stadium along with the trophy. The Indian captain did come for the post-match conference and shared his view. “This is one thing which I have never seen since I have started playing cricket, since I have started following cricket that a champion team is denied to get a trophy,” Suryakumar said.
“That too a hard-earned one, it’s not like we got it easily. It was a hard-earned tournament. We have been here since the 4th [September], played two back-to-back good games. I feel we deserved it. I can’t say anything more, I think I have summed it up really well, I can’t say anything more about it,” he added.
